Here is the first entry for my decade beginning with the number four. I do not know how this has happened and seriously question how much time has really passed, despite what the calendars say.
This is also the first time I think I have ever written anything on here under a Labour government. I may write more on that in another entry when I have had a chance to put some thoughts together about everything.
Onto comedy matters, my last entry mentioned that I was heading to perform at a festival in Kent and was worried about ticket sales. Well, that wasn’t my only concern on the night.
I thought I had booked a function room in a pub. When I arrived, I asked the lady behind the bar where the comedy was happening and she led me outside. I thought maybe there’d be another room out the back. But there wasn’t, because it turns out that I was performing outside in a corner of the courtyard in front of where the TV would normally be for the football. The courtyard was under a cover, but it was definitely outside.
For a moment, I questioned whether it was even worth doing as my inner diva kicked in. But then I thought that as I was there, I might as well do the show. After all, ten people had bought tickets and it wasn’t their fault that no one else had.
Well, ten people bought tickets, but only six of them actually showed up. Thus equalling the smallest audience I have ever performed HTWAPQ to. But performing to small audiences in odd locations is very much how I developed the show ten years ago. I would perform anywhere, regardless of how big or small the venue or audience was – often the small side. So, it was good to be reminded of those days.
After the PA man came to set things up, it felt a bit more like a gig. And the show turned out to be a lot of fun. The six people who did show up were all engaged and willing participants.
It was worthwhile doing to try and get my head around the set. I think the first half will work, but the second half is looking a little thin and I am suddenly starting to worry whether I’ll have enough time to develop anything new that works in time. I am in two minds about what I do with the music round and the material relating to that.
I have three previews left, with two on the same evening in Watford next weekend. I have time to get something sorted and sometimes time pressures force my subconscious to come up with something. It is cutting it fine now though.
